In 1893, Captain Stentiford, a retired English sea captain, purchased a four hectare parcel of land on Coonawarra’s famous Terra Rossa soils. Planted exclusively to Shiraz, the vines of this block, now over 120 years old, are considered one of the finest plantings of the varietal on the Limestone Coast.
Bright crimson-purple; 110yo vines don’t necessarily result in powerful fruit (and wine), but they certainly do here; it is brimful of blackberry. Licorice, warm spices and French oak, the conclusion of primary fermentation taking place in that oak ( new and used) and gaining the integration and mouthfeel only this technique provides. A final barrel selection produced an exceptional wine. - 2017 Halliday Wine Companion (97 points)
