Planning a Coonawarra Wedding: Why Couples Are Heading to the Terra Rossa

Author: Robert James from Ever After Weddings

Most couples start planning a wedding with a guest list and a date. Couples who choose Coonawarra tend to start with a feeling: a long table, a glass of Cabernet, the sun dropping behind rows of old vines and nobody in a hurry to leave. Halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide, this narrow strip of red earth has quietly become one of South Australia's most rewarding places to say "I do", and one of the few where a wedding naturally turns into a whole weekend.

If you're weighing up a country wedding, here's what makes Coonawarra special, how to get everyone there, and how to plan a celebration your guests will be talking about long after the last dance.

Why Coonawarra?

Coonawarra is defined by its soil. The famous terra rossa strip is a cigar-shaped ridge of rich red earth just 27 kilometres long and about two kilometres wide, sitting on limestone above an ancient reservoir of pure water. Add warm days, cool nights and a long, mild growing season, and you get the region's signature: deep, structured red wines, above all Cabernet Sauvignon.

For a wedding, that translates into something hard to find closer to the city. There are more than 25 cellar doors along the strip, heritage vineyards more than a century old, and a relaxed country pace that gives the day room to breathe. Guests aren't racing home after the speeches; they're staying the night, and very likely the next one too. Brand's Laira's own guide to discovering Coonawarra is a good place to start if you're new to the region.

Getting there, and getting everyone there

Coonawarra is a road-trip wedding. It's roughly a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Adelaide and around five hours from Melbourne, which makes it genuinely central for families split across both cities. Mount Gambier's regional airport is under an hour's drive south, so check current flight schedules if some of your guests would rather fly than drive.

  • Because most guests will be travelling, the details matter more than they would for a city wedding: Send save-the-dates early, especially to interstate guests, so they can plan leave and travel.
  • Share an accommodation list. Coonawarra and nearby Penola have B&Bs, cottages and motels, but rooms are limited and can fill quickly on busy weekends.
  • Organise transport between accommodation and the venue so nobody has to drive after the celebrations.
  • Put the logistics in one place, such as a wedding website or a single email, with drive times, parking and a rough timeline for the weekend.

Choosing your season

Coonawarra's calendar shapes the feel of your day. Spring brings fresh green growth on the vines and mild, comfortable weather. Summer offers long evenings and golden light for photos. Autumn is vintage season, when the region is at its busiest and the vines turn to rust and gold, which makes for beautiful but popular dates. Winter is cooler and wetter, better suited to a cosy celebration indoors by the fire.

Whatever the season, choose a venue with a strong indoor option. Country weather can change quickly, and having a beautiful space to move into means a forecast never has to derail your plans.

Make it a weekend

The best Coonawarra weddings aren't a single day. With guests already travelling, it's worth planning a loose weekend around the main event:

  • Friday: arrivals and relaxed welcome drinks, a chance for both families to meet before the big day.
  • Saturday: the ceremony, a long afternoon on the lawns, then dinner and dancing into the night.
  • Sunday: a slow recovery, then a wander along the wine trail to visit a few cellar doors before the drive home.

It's a gift to your guests, too. A wedding weekend in wine country feels like a holiday, not an obligation.

A wedding at Brand's Laira

Right in the heart of the strip on the Riddoch Highway, Brand's Laira brings together the two things that make a Coonawarra wedding memorable: heritage and a setting built for celebrating. The estate's old vines date back to 1893, when Captain Henry Stentiford bought the block from John Riddoch, the founder of the Coonawarra region, who had planted the first vines, and Stentiford became custodian of some of the region's founding vineyards. In 1950 Eric Brand, a baker by trade, and his wife Nancy bought the property, and in 1966 Eric made the first vintage under the Brand's Laira name, later becoming the First Patron of Coonawarra. You can read the full story of Brand's Laira here.

That history is still part of the venue. The original stone building, Eric's Shed, has been preserved beneath the soaring ceiling of the cellar door, which was refurbished in 2019. Couples can choose the rustic character of Eric's Shed or the large, modern cellar door, with floor-to-ceiling vineyard views and an alfresco dining area.

A wedding day here typically flows across the property: vows among the vines, cocktail hour on the sprawling lawns, then dinner in the cellar door. With private hire of the entire venue for the day or evening, including the cellar door, the meeting room, Eric's cellar and the grounds, the whole estate becomes yours, for up to 150 guests. The ceremony and reception can both be held on site, or you can marry elsewhere and bring everyone back to the cellar door for the reception.

Catering isn't in-house, which gives you the freedom to choose a menu and style that suits you, and the cellar door team will help you find the right caterer for your day. The wine, of course, is taken care of. Coonawarra Cabernet with the main course is practically tradition, and the Brand's Laira range covers everything from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay on the lawns to rosé, Shiraz and Cabernet at the table. Booking a tasting at the cellar door is the most enjoyable way to choose your wedding wines.

Your Coonawarra wedding checklist

  • Book your venue first, then your caterer, and ask the venue team for recommendations.
  • Hold your guest accommodation early and share the options with your invitations.
  • Arrange transport between accommodation and the venue.
  • Plan your wet-weather option alongside the outdoor ceremony.
  • Choose your wines at a cellar door tasting.
  • Build a simple weekend itinerary so guests can make the most of the trip.
